Dannenman's Aces Good

Championship Event
$3300 + $200 NL

Jamie Kerstetter was all-in for 9,075 and got called by seat 1. Jamie's pocket 6s were racing against AK. The board came Q 7 2 8 6 and Jamie doubled up.

After seat 6 opened for 1,125, Steve Dannenmann raised to 5,500. Seat 6 called and the flop came Queen-high. Seat 6 checked to Steve, who fired 10k. Seat 6 showed his pocket Jacks and mucked. Steve showed his pocket Aces and collected the pot.

Mike 'Little Man' Sica has busted out and hit the door. Jason Young was out soon after.

With ten minutes left on the clock, TD Tab Duchateau announced that everyone would play five more hands, then bag & tag for the night.

From Bad Beat to Good Run

Championship Event
$3300 + $200 NLChinmay Patel - Player ProfileWhen Borgata implemented the Bad Beat Jackpot in early 2009, officials knew lives would change, especially with potential jackpots totaling more than $300,000.

As a player and witness to the casino's second BBJ in February of that year, Chinmay Patel's windfall was "only" $11,000, but he used it as a spring board for a professional career.

"It helped me out a lot," says the 24-year-old from Philadelphia, "I started playing 2-5 and 5-10 (no limit cash games), was on a nice rush and got a bank roll."

The success prompted Patel to quit his job with a pharmaceutical company and pursue poker full time, something that wasn't an easy sell to his family. "You have to understand I come from a strict Indian background," says Patel, who's parents left India for the United States in 1990.

"Both my parents have college degrees and my dad has a master's as a civil engineer. Telling them I was quitting my job to play poker didn't go over very well."

Piyush and Jayshri warmed to the idea after he assured them that he had his Penn State biology degree to fall back on if poker didn't work out. That, plus a solid resume after two years in the work force, helped the Patel family to reluctantly support their son's decision.

One year into his new career, Patel is finding most of his success in the Borgata high stakes cash games ($10-$20 NL or higher), and is still fine-tuning his tournament play.

"I'm learning to get used to the blinds, and how my stack compares to the blinds and to the other players," he says. "Everything's standard in cash and I know what a big bet is. In tournaments the blinds go up and players adjust their betting, so I just need to keep getting more experience."

Patel picked-up some "on the job training" Thursday in the satellite qualifier for the Championship Event after not finding any cash games he liked. He was one of seven players to earn a $3,500 voucher after only paying $390 to enter the tournament.

Now that he's in the field for Day 1A, it's been a roller coaster with his stack ranging anywhere from 15,000 to 50,000 chips and he ends play slightly less than his 30k starting stack. "Up and down, a few bad beats, but nothing terrible," he says.

And it's so far, so good on the career change. Patel's picked up a couple of cashes in Borgata deep stack and daily tournament play, but the bulk of his success comes from the high limit room.

Little Man Triples Up, Still Short

Championship Event
$3300 + $200 NL

Mike 'Little Man' Sica got his last chips in, getting action from two players. They checked down the board of J 6 5 8 J. "Whatta you got?" Mike asks the first. "Ace-high" is the response. When he hears Ace-high, the other player mucks. "Well whaddo I got?" says Little Man as he rolls over his cards: J8 suited, good for the full house. Mike tripled up to about 8k in chips.

Last Level Underway

Championship Event
$3300 + $200 NL

Players completed level six, took a break, and have returned to play level 7 with blinds of 200/400 with 50 antes. The TD decided to forgo the dinner break and finish up for the day, so this will be the last 75-minute level today.

Gene Castro

On the break, I scoped out the stacks and it appeared that Gene Castro had about 115k. Jason "Asian J" Min (Astoria, NY) had about the same, but as I was getting his name, he won a pot. He's definitely over 120k now so I'm outing him as the chip leader.

Wiz Pans Panayiotou

Championship Event
$3300 + $200 NL

On a flop of K 8 5 rainbow. Bobby 'Wiz' Wisiak bet 1,050. Eric Panayiotou called, and a third player folded. Turn was an Ace and both players checked. River was a 9 and Bobby fired 1,500. Eric thought for a few seconds, then made the call. Bobby showed A8 for Aces-up and Eric mucked. Bobby was awarded the pot.

Blinds Up

Championship Event
$3300 + $200 NL

Level 6: Blinds are now up to 150/300 for real, with 25 antes.

Jason Young said something about how he would have had a better day had he stayed in his room and applied a cheese grater to his private parts. I guess that means things are not going well for him here today. He's already employed the masseuse and that that didn't seem to help.

Chris Reslock is now enjoying the masseuse. He seems to be having a better day. Plus he doesn't have a hat on. I've never seen him without a hat and I don't know if any pictures exist of him sans cap.

Baby Bra-Tay

Championship Event
$3300 + $200 NL

Every once in a while, poker players do something besides playing poker. Matt Brady and Esther 'E-Tay' Taylor have the most adorable 5-month old named Kayla and I just got to meet her. She's a happy baby with some good poker-playing genes to her credit. Better look out for her at the poker table in about 21 years.

Blinds are Going Down?

Championship Event
$3300 + $200 NL

Believe it or not, even well run poker tournaments, with the best structures in the game, can have hiccups. Case in point, after coming back from break to play Level 5, players are now kicking in a 25 ante, which usually means blinds are going up.

Except in this extended format, where the structure repeats the 100/200 blinds from Level 4.

Ten of the remaining 11 tables got it right, but table 2 took it up a notch, and increased the blinds to 150/300 when the antes were added. None of the players or the dealer caught the oversight until after playing two hands.

The situation is quickly rectified and now everyone's on the same page. Matt Brady laughed and said something that most poker players dream of hearing, "blinds are going down!"

Level 5 (100/200/25 ante) is officially in full swing.

Blinds Up

Championship Event
$3300 + $200 NL

Play has resumed with level 5, blinds 100/200 with 25 antes.

Al Grimes is still out in front with ~93k. Matt Brady is up to ~76k. Adam Gerber is stacking about 75k and Steve Dannenmann has ~72k.

Adam Gerber (Moorestown, NJ) is a local business owner and only plays tournaments on the east coast. He won the US Poker Championships $10k main event ($606k) in October 2007 at the Taj Mahal and has several cashes here at Borgata.

Head Count

Championship Event
$3300 + $200 NL

The final number for Day 1A is 129. The fest of the field plays Monday at 11 am, including players like Roy Winston, Maurice Hawkins, Charlie Hook, and Mike Leah.

Several others are currently in the Poker Room trying to satellite into the Championship Event, including Dwight Pilgrim, James Boyle and Mike Dentale.

The last chance to satty is 7 pm, $350 + $40 (~1 in 10).

Players are on currently on break.

Brady Tweets Borgata

Championship Event
$3300 + $200 NL

I plucked this off Twitter today:

mattbrady_ Dear borgata, you've fd me in basically every tournament i've ever played here for years but I will forgive u if I win this $3500..thank u

Matt Brady

Matt is currently up to over 70k so has more than doubled his starting stack of 30k. If this works, I'm going to start tweeting casinos about my results. :)

Something Blue

Championship Event
$3300 + $200 NL

Blue Chip Tournament

The Borgata special poker tournament chip set is in play and the most coveted piece is the blue 5 thousand chip. "It helps bring out our feminine, softer side," says Todd Rebello, "actually it helps distinguish them from the rest (of the chips)."

One other player says, "it's not that valuable, because I don't have any." Two hands later he's heading for the door.

The Silver Fox

Championship Event
$3300 + $200 NL

The Silver Fox, Lenny Weissman, (Atlantic City, NJ) is in the house today. Lenny says that back in 1974, he and Joe Namath were called the two most eligible bachelors in New York. Well Joe moved away, but Lenny is still around.

We're hoping he's going to he around a lot longer. He just had brain surgery for a tumor. It was obviously successful, as he's here playing poker today. As for how well he's playing, I guess we'll have to wait and see. Glad you're still with us Lenny!

Brown Sets Up on Lindh

Championship Event
$3300 + $200 NL

On a flop of 764, Bobby 'Wiz' Wisiak bet 850. Chris Lindh called, then Mitchell Brown raised to 2k straight. Bobby opted out, but Chris made the call. The turn was the Q. Chris checked, Mitchell bet 2,100, Chris raised to 6,400, Mitchell moved all-in for 14,325 and Chris called.

Chris held 76 for two pair, but Mitchell had him crushed with pocket 4s for the set. Chris needed a 7 or 6 on the river and when the 8 peeled off, he thought for a half a second that he had caught one of his outs. Mitchell doubled up and Chris was left with about 11k (and busted out soon after).

"I told you to bet your own sets" said Danny Yousefzadeh from the other end of the table "see?" Mitchell nodded in agreement.

Chris Lindh and Mitchell Brown

Level 3 concluded and play continued into level 4 with blinds of 100/200.

Building a Foundation

Championship Event
$3300 + $200 NL

Grimes-ing Away

Early Chip Counts:

Al Grimes 88k
Steve Dannemann 64k
Sheree Bykofsky 56k
Darrell Neville 45k

Level 3 (75/150) is underway.

Big Bet - Big Score

Championship Event
$3300 + $200 NL

Bykofsky's Trippin'

When stacks are deep and there's 3 and 4 betting preflop, even a legitimate raise can look like a move. That's the case for Gene Fouksman (Manalapan, NJ), who's 3-bet with pocket aces are improbably run down by the AK of Sheree Bykofsky.

Jamie Kerstetter opens for 250, gets one caller and Fouksman makes it 800. From the small blind, Bykofsky shoves for 22k and Kerstetter is stunned and gets out of the way.

Fouksman snap calls and shows AA vs Bykofsky's AK. "I wanted to take down the pot, but was willing to race against a bluff or small pocket pair," she says. "I thought for a second he might have aces, but you have to understand there was some history."

The flop brings two kings, giving Bykofsky trip kings, to cripple Fouksman, who's eliminated a few hands later. After the hand, Kerstetter says she folded a king, making Bykofsky a 5% underdog to win the hand.

Bykofsky explained that she and Fouksman mixed it up a few hands earlier and that she was tilting a bit after Fouksman turned trips with a suited 2 3. Bykofsky had K J of the same suit and flopped top pair, but was done in on fourth street.

This time Bykofsky's trips do the damage and her big bet turns into a big score as she's up to 45k.

Level 2

Championship Event
$3300 + $200 NL

A few stragglers continue to find their seats while the first level of play is in the books. The players say that the "warm-up" is over and not they've shaken the cobwebs it's time to play poker.

Level 2 (50/100) is underway.

Table Draws

Championship Event
$3300 + $200 NL

Eng, Brady, Richard Rice & Dannenmann (l-r)

For a myriad of reasons, Day 1A in Borgata Championship Events traditionally produce lower numbers than the 1B field. Right now 115 players are registered for Sunday, with a significantly higher number slated for Monday's play.

While some say Day 1A fields are softer than their counterpart, don't tell that to the players stuck at tables 2, 8 and 15. Here's a look at some of the initial draws.

Table 15

Steve Dannenmann
