Play resumes at noon.

Level 13 - Final of the Night

This is it - Level 13 1200-2400 blinds.....300 antes. Last level of the night.

Tables from the Poker Room will bag chips there and are not condensing into The Signature Room.

We'll have unofficial chip leaders up shortly.

Felted Friends Await Next Tournament

Frankie "Calzone" Monte & Norman Barao

Frankie "Calzone" Monte (Hammonton, NJ) and good friend Norman Barao (Chester, NY) both were short stacked and both get knocked out with pocket kings.

Frankie's K-K loses to Q-Q and Norman's K-K loses to A-A.

So what's next I asked as they sit at an empty table plotting a strategy for the remaining tournaments. "I love the second chance tournaments. I'm gonna play it every night I can" says Norman.

Frankie's not giving up either. He plans on coming back strong in the Spring Poker Open - either the 400 or the 300.

Babyface Killer Up To 250,000

Anthony "Babyface Killer" Merrill chops down and felts a monster stack in three consecutive hands.

Anthony grows his stack from 80,000 up to 250,000 in back to back to back hands.

The final blow was Killer's A-A vs. A-K. Three hearts on the flop four flushes big slick.

All-in and A-A holds up - no heart. Babyface Killer is living up to his name.

"Loss" Wins with A-A Thrice

Jason Loss (McSherrystown, PA) had A-A hold up three times to pad his 140,000 big stack.

Just started Level 12 (1000/2000 blinds) antes - 300.

Once we finish 13 we're done for the night!

Snake Bitten

Jake "The Snake"

Usually the snake pit is teaming with vipers, but Jake Deutsch is the only member of "Team Snake" playing in Event 1. The rest of the four member crew couldn't make the trip from Staten Island, leaving Jake "The Snake" alone in the pit.

"I slither in and then snake out," says Deutsch which prompts the rest of the table to join in with the puns.

"Aces were snake bitten earlier," adds one player as he rolls his eyes.

Deutsch doubles up with pocket 10s against pocket aces when he spikes a 10 on the turn. He's turned 38k into 87k and is around the chip average.

300 Club

Half the tables in The Signature Room are empty as the field continues to shrink. The goal is to clear enough tables so the remaining players in the Poker Room can move to the Signature Room.

Right now there's 18 tables left in the Poker Room and 12 in The Signature Room (25 max). A total of 300 players remain from Day 1B and the average stack is 77k.

After playing through Level 13, play will stop for the night and the remaining players join the 103 players from Day 1A. The combined field returns Monday at Noon to play for the Borgata Spring Poker Open's first championship.

Not Clowning Around

Eric "Clown Fish" Doerr

Happened to stumble over a huge hand.

Once the river card fell, Eric "Clown Fish" Doerr bet a pot sized 35,000 from the big blind.

Opponent was struggling over a board of A
1077K♣. Eric - "I put him on Ace rag since he limped in. With the king falling I know he thinks he's looking at a chop."

Opponent calls and Eric tables A-7 for the full-house.

150,000 in the pot. Eric is now sitting among the leaders with 195,000.

Looking for the Double-Up

Hang-Eng Around

Players who survived through the dinner break are now trying to make moves to stay around until Day 2. Unfortunately for a couple of Borgata regulars, their day is over.

Robert Varkoyni (Great Neck, NY) is on the rail and as the former WSOP bracelet winner walks by the media table says, "you can't win them all."

Cathy Dever (Ephrata, PA) is also out. "Mark my words, my luck will turn around tomorrow," she says while looking forward to Event 2 which kicks off 11 am Monday.

Those still hanging around include Michele Hughes (Martinsburg, WV) and Gordon Eng (Cliffside Park, NJ), who are below the chip average of 60k.

Eng doubles up after dropping to 11k. He then shoves all in with ace, king off suit to take down another small pot. Eng's now at 38k, while Hughes has less than 20k.

Level 11 (800/1600/200 ante) is underway.

Like Taking Candy From A Babyface Killer

Anthony "Babyface Killer" Merill

Anthony Merill (Long Island, NY) turned 21 in August of 2009 and is trying to make his entire table cry wee wee wee wee all the way home.

He chose Borgata and this deepstack for his first ever live tournament.

"They call me Babyface Killer" proclaimed Merill.
Has this kid's voice even changed yet?
"I've been playing underground in NY since I was sixteen" said Anthony.

Indeed Killer's pocket two's sliced up pocket kings after a 2 hit the flop.

With that double-up Babyface Killer is currently at 125,000.

Slow & Steady

772 players started Day 1B and half the field is gone. Right now 390 players remain and the tournament staff is hopeful that they can move the remaining tables from the Poker Room into The Signature Room.

The average stack is just under 50k.

Level 10 (600/1,200/200) is underway.

Nicoles Joins 100,000 Club

Fotios Nicoles (Clifton, NJ) has been at the same table in The Signature Room since "Shuffle Up And Deal".

He recently doubled up after jamming the flop with Q-Q on a board of under cards. Top pair called and lost.

Foti says hello to avid Borgata Blog readers "The Kavourakis Boys In The City".

Foti has 100,000 in front of him.

Fast Food

After a fast 45 minute dinner break players are back in action as Level 9 (500/1,000/100 ante) is underway.

Play wraps tonight after Level 13, sometime after 11 pm.

Dinner Time!

Since I keep getting asked this question, the total number of chips in play should be 30,350,000.

In a three-way pre-flop all-in, seat 6 was the short stack who open-shoved. Then Seat 7 shoved. Seat 10 gave it some thought, then called, having both other players covered. Seat 6 held JT off and was way behind. Seat 7 held pocket Queens for the lead and Seat 10 held AK off. The flop of K T 6 gave the lead to the big stack and left two players in jeopardy.

A Queen fell on the turn, giving seat seat 7 and set and the lead once again. The river card changed the lead once again as an Ace fell, giving the short-stack a runner-runner Broadway straight and the triple-up. Seat 7 took the side pot with his set of Queens and Seat 10 was left shaking his head.

Mike "Little Man" Sica

Over on Table 34, six players limped to the flop of A 9 7. The blinds checked to seat 3, who fired 1,800. Seat 5 (hijack) called and Mike 'Little Man' Sica called from the button. The other players dropped out. Turn was a Jack and seat 3 launched 3,300 into the pot. Both players called. River was another 9 and all three players checked. Mike declared "I've got an Ace" and seat 3 rolled over A6 suited. Seat 5 mucked and Mike showed A6 offsuit to split the pot.

Our suspected chip leader, Jason Nguyen, has dropped back to about 140k, but still appears to hold the lead.

In a hand that extended well into the break, Jason Flad of Brooklyn, NY (known as "seat 8" in an earlier post) bet 30k on a flop of 6 5 3 with two spades. Mark Hansen (button) tanked for about 12 minutes, well into the dinner break, then shoved for 42,500. The third player folded quickly and Jason called, showing AQ of spades for the nut flush draw. Mark held pocket Jacks. It was over quickly as the deuce of spades landed on the turn, completing Jason's flush and leaving Mark drawing dead. Jason chipped up to about 130k, closing in on the chip leader.

Level 8 is over and players have scattered to enjoy their 45 minute dinner break. Play will resume at about 6:45 pm.

Don't Feed The Siegels

Eric Siegel

P.P.I. - Poker Players International's Marketing and Player Development Leader Eric Siegel has built his stack to 100,000 to be among the unofficial chip leaders.

Notable hands include: pocket queens holding up against an A-5 shove, A-A holding up against A-K, and how about 10
♠J♠ on a flop of 9♠A♠8 - Eric wins a monster pot when his 7♠ hits the turn.

One thing I noticed is that Eric, the New York poker veteran always seems to be having fun with the table while still playing good solid poker.

Payouts!

The numbers are finally official! The total player count for this event, combining days 1A and 1B, is 1,214, creating a total buy-in of $607,000. The final 100 players will get paid as follows:

Gotta Give Props to Roxane

Roxane Duguay (Montreal, Canada) is smiling and having some fun with tablemate Mike. She's keeping track of what color cards hit the flop, turn, and river. No high-stakes money involved, just for fun claims Duguay.

Her black cards are winning to Mike's red 57-45.

Roxane just played all week at the NAPT and drove down with some friends to play here.

She's currently hovering at 38,000.

Level 8 has begun. Blinds 400/800. Ante - 75.

Final level before dinner break.

Multi-way Pots!

Nguyen-Nguyen Situation

Jason Nguyen

On the turn with a board of AJ45, Hiep Nguyen moved all-in. After a bit of time in the tank, seat 6 made the call, showing J9 for a pair of Jacks with the flush draw. Hiep held pocket 4s for the set and the lead. The river was the Q and no help to seat 6. He was left circling the drain with less than 1k in chips.

Over on table 35 is our unofficial chip leader. Jason Nguyen is sitting behind about 155k and appears to be way out in front of the pack.

Final payouts have been announced and will be posted shortly.

Young Gun Firing

Malik Wiggins

Malik Wiggins (Columbus, OH) is sitting on 65,000 in chips.

Malik - "Basically no suck-outs and no bad beats. Doubled up after flopping a set of fours to an overpair of kings."

Malik just turned 21 so this is his first tournament at Borgata. He's young, but not young to the game. Wiggins has been playing live poker for four years at an Indian casino in NY that allows players 18 and older to play.

Look out Joe Cada.

Level 7 Underway

Play has resumed with Level 7 and blinds of 300/600 with 75 antes. This also means it is 90 minutes until the dinner break, which will come at the end of Level 8.

I Waited All Day For The K-8

On a board of J-10-9-7-9, George Antonakos (Baltimore, MD) stands up in fear, then straightens up and doubles up with K-8.

After a small raise, George shoves every bit of his 10,000 putting his tournament life at stake with K-8 of clubs. The next seat insta-calls with pocket aces. Whoopsie!

George joked after the K-8 cracking, "I've been waiting for that hand all day. That's my game - play bad and get lucky. Hopefully I'll be playing till 3am tomorrow just because of that hand."

Players are on a short break. Just two more levels until dinner.

The Women Are Representing

Olga Varkonyi

Olga Varkonyi (Long Island, NY) likes playing in tournaments with a lot of people. That's precisely why she signed up for this event.

No stranger to deepstack as her profile shows a deepstack first place victory.

"I'm having fun here. This is a great place to play" stated Olga.

I noticed Olga, not because she was the only woman at her table, but because her cap was so sparkling and flashy. Her mirrored shades are pretty cool too.

Level 6 is Underway

Level 6 has begun. Blinds are 200/400. Antes - 50.

The Signature Room still looks very full with a ton of chip shuffling and chatter.

"The Natural" Takes One Out

Roy "The Natural" Gardner

After Seat 5 opened for 1,100, Roy "The Natural" Gardner made it 3k to play from seat 6. Action folded around to seat 1, who moved all-in. Seat 5 folded and Roy quickly called. Apparently Seat 1 was not aware that Roy had three-bet before his all-in. In any case, seat 1 turned over pocket Tens and Roy had him crushed with pocket Aces.

The dealer quickly rolled out the board of Q J 8 K 7 and Roy took the pot, busting seat 1 and chipping up to almost 50K. (The player in seat 5 jumped out of his chair when the river card hit, saying he folded 87 suited, which would have taken the pot with two pair.)

On my latest pass through the Poker Room, I spotted some more players:
Joe Simmons (WPT final table here in January '07)
Vinny Pahuja ($860K+ career in tournament earnings)
David Inselberg
and
MJ Bernstein, fresh from his win of the $270 NLHE event at Mohegan Sun, was just arriving to begin play during level 5. Shortly after he took his seat, he was in the big blind in a hand against the player in seat 8. On the river with a board of Q 7 4 5 K, MJ checked, seat 8 bet 6k, and MJ asked how much he had left. After getting the count, MJ raised to 16k straight. Seat 8 mucked and MJ pulled the pot.

Deepstack Donk Alert

Rob Nguyen (New York, NY) is steadily adding to his stack.

While I'm visiting his table he turns a set and talks his way into getting paid off by top pair.

But more interestingly was an earlier hand where a total DONK had 10-10 pre-flop, saw Rob flip over his Q-Q and still called off her last 6,000. "Oh well, I'm already in this far" she sighed.

Talk about giving chips away. Needless to say, she lost and is out of the tournament.

ACES crack ACES

Jeff Benhart (Lutherville, MD) looked down and saw pocket aces staring back. Finally, the mother of all starting hands.

He pushes all his chips in pre-flop. Even though it's Level 1, he gets a call. To Jeff's surprise his opponent also tables aces.

Okay, that's funny but we've all seen this happen once or twice. Chop it up, right?

Flop comes down K
♠Q♠brick. Jeff notices that he has the Ace of spades and three fifths of a royal flush. Turn comes J♠. Sweat starts pouring down his opponent's face.

The river hits. No, Jeff didn't hit the Royal, but an 8♠ still gave him the miracle 1% flush and a 47,000 pot.

The poor kid whose aces got cracked by aces somehow survived the blow and during the next two levels built his stack back up to 10,000.

Alas, when it isn't your day, it isn't your day - his pocket queens got run over by an A-K that exploded into quad kings.

Leve 5 is Underway

Level 5 has kicked off with 150/300 blinds and now all players must ante 25 each hand. Many tournament players figure the tournament doesn't start until the antes kick in. This forces the action as players will start to bleed chips every hand whether they play or not.

Level 4 Done

Dan Howe and Olga Varkonyi tangle with Seat 8

Three-way action over on Olga Varkonyi's table: With the board showing KT57, Seat 8 (small blind) bet 2,200. Dan Howe of Brigantine, NJ, (seat 6) in the cutoff made the call, as did Olga, who was on the button. The river card was the 3 and seat 8 fired 6,500. Dan tanked for a bit, then moved all-in. Olga opted out. Seat 8 asked for a count and it was 10,900 more back to him.

After a little thought, seat 8 mucked his hand and Dan collected a nice pot without showing his hand.

The bell has rung signaling the end of level 4. Players are enjoying 15 minutes away from the felt before action resumes.

Deepstack In High Limit Room

Borgata High Limit Room

As a result of such a bountiful turnout, two of our deepstack tables have spilled over into Borgata's high limit room. For some this is an exciting chance to play in an area they normally don't or can't afford.

Glenn Stock (Wilmington, DE) - "Yeah, this is my first time back in this room and my first ever deepstack tournament. It's all good. I like that you get to take your time and wait it out."

He's curious how other tables are doing and is looking forward to the break to catch up.

Of course Glenn could always check out our blog to stay on top of updates and the day's action.

Registration Closed (Almost)

768 players are in the field for Day 1B, bringing the two day total to 1,210.

The preliminary prize pool is $605,000, with the top prize of more than $126,000. The top 100 players will cash with places 91-100 earning approximately $1,056.

Tournament officials say there could be one or two more stragglers signing-up shortly.

Final numbers will be out later today.

Level 4 (100/200) winding down.

More Notables

Paul Spitzberg is hiding under a WSOP baseball cap here in The Signature Room.

I hiked over to the Poker Room, where tournament tables are scattered throughout, intermixed with the cash games, to see who was playing over there, and came up with a couple of names:

We do have some WSOP bracelet holders in our midst. Mike 'Little Man' Sica is back in the high limit area. He won his hardware in 2004 playing No Limit Hold'em, cashing for more than half a million bucks. His lifetime tournament earnings has now topped the million mark. Farzad Rouhani is in the poker room tournament area. His lifetime tournament earnings have topped $1.6 million. He collected his bracelet in 2008 playing Omaha Hi/Lo and Stud Hi/Lo.

Robert Varkonyi

Of course Robert Varkonyi, winner of the 2002 WSOP Main Event is here. He took home $2 million for that victory and got to shave Phil Hellmuth's head on camera.

Faces in the Crowd

Robert Varkonyi (2002 WSOP Main Event Champion)
Phil Neiman (2009 Borgata Summer Open Deep Stack Champion)
Eric Siegel (PPI)
Olga Varkonyi
Ryan Eriquezzo
Sheree Bykofsky
Manny Patel
Cathy Dever
Gordon Eng
Michele Hughes
Jason Warriner
James "Suits" Salters

Level 2 Done

On a flop of A98 Seat 6 bet 800. Tom Guliano (Upstate NY) took some time, then decided to call. Turn was the 8, pairing the board, and Seat 6 fired 1,800. Again Tom burned some time-bank, finally opting to call. River was the 9, double-pairing the board. Seat 6 fired 4k without hesitation.

Tom tanked again for a couple of minutes, then made the call. Seat 6 insta-mucked. Tom showed pocket Queens, which explained the difficulty he had calling on the Ace-high, double-paired board. "I had outs" said seat 6 with a smile.

Level 2 has concluded and players are taking ten.

More Numbers

744 is the new total for Day 1B, taking the 2 day total to 1,186.

The line at the registration window is now empty and last minute stragglers have until the end of Level 2 to get in the field.

When the final numbers are in, tournament organizers will start tabulating the prize pool.

End of the Line

Silver Lining, All Should Get In

As the field of more than 1,100 players continues to grow, the line at the registration window shrinks. "It's going to be a long two days," says Bryant Carlino (Milford, CT), who's last in line one hour after Day 1B play begins, "here at least I can stretch my legs."

Just ahead of him is Julien Studley (New York, NY) who shrugs his shoulders and is confident he'll get in the field. "We'll see," he says, as a tournament official walks by taking a head count.

"Look at it this way," adds Carlino, "I'm not going to lose all my chips standing in line."

Level 2 (50/100) is underway.

Studley Looking for a No-Limit Seat

First Player Busts

Player Count Tops 1,100

TD Supreme Tab Duchateau announced that today's player count has topped 660, so the total player count for this event has already crested 1,100, with a long line of players still waiting to register.

Mark Hansen

One player has already been dispatched in a very brutal way. Picking up the action on the river, the board showed K Q T 8 T. The player in seat 8, the big blind, checked to Mark Hansen (Chester Springs, PA) who fired 1,600. Then seat 8 check-raised to 5k straight. After a bit of thought, Mark kicked it on up to 15k. Seat 8 quickly moved all-in and Mark insta-called.

The big blind held A 3 for the flopped nut flush, but Mark held pocket Kings for the rivered full boat. The player in seat 8 was stunned by his misfortune as he became the first player to report to the rail today. Mark has just about doubled his starting stack of 25k.

Day 1B Underway

The cards are in air and the lines are long! Day 1B of Event 1 has 25 tables in The Signature Room and a whole lot more in the Poker Room, as the players with seats are already playing.

The last minute rush has a ton of players patiently waiting to register at the cage, eager to hit the tables. It'll take a while to clear the line and get a handle on how many players will join the 442 that played in Day 1A.
