Event 17: 54 Players Remain

$170 + $30 (NL, Re-Entry)

They've just broken the 7th table here in the back of the Poker Room. Just six 9-handed tables are still in action. With 54 players still hanging on, the average stack is over 157k. They're currently playing 5k/10k blinds with 1k antes. This means an average stack has less than 16 big blinds. Cost per round (CPR) is 24k. That means an average stack can only survive six and a half orbits before being blinded off.

Not that they're going to just sit and be blinded off. The cries of "All-In" are occurring often. I watched pocket 6s doubled up against QJ. A3 suited held up against KJ to double up another short-stack.

Event 17: Finally!

$170 + $30 (NL, Re-Entry)

After 8 all in survivals, including Josh Brikis' double-up, and 40 minutes of play, the bubble breaks when Jedi Aldines (S. River, NJ via Brazil) and his pocket 5s are eliminated by the pocket kings of Wil Clark (Moorestown, NJ).

"What are you going to do," laments Aldines, who's out in the 82nd place earning, zippo.

The next 81 players all collect at least $280.

The floor manager puts half the time back on the clock (20 minutes) as Level 17 (4k/8k/500 ante) continues.

Event 17: Bubble Time

$170 + $30 (NL, Re-Entry)

82 players remain and play is now hand-for-hand. After the next elimination, players hit the money!

Event 17: Coloring Up

$170 + $30 (NL, Re-Entry)

The black chips are off the table. 96 players remain with an average stack of 88k.

Level 16 (3k/6k/500 ante) continues.

Event 17: KK vs QQ vs JJ (almost)

$170 + $30 (NL, Re-Entry)

Early position raiser makes it 18,500.
Middle position reraises all in for 54,000
Late position reraise shoves for much more.
Early position: "you stole my move," he says. "Fold." showing JJ

MP: QQ
LP: KK

The flop is a king and Adina Winston (Manhattan, NY) scoops a big pot to take her stack to 225k.

Level 15 (2k/4k/400 ante) is winding down and players are set for a 15 minute color up break.

Level 14 (1,500/3,000/400 ante) is underway.

Event 17: Big Pot, Big Mistake

$170 + $30 (NL, Re-Entry)

Levy (right) Likes the Action

If you play poker long enough, you'll eventually make the mistake of calling a bet that you didn't realize is a raise. Unfortunately for Harvey Sheff (Forest Hills, NY), the mistake costs him a lot of chips.

A player in early position goes all in for 24,400 and the action is on Sheff, who says "call," and throws in the big blind bet of 2k. After realizing there's a raise, Sheff throws his cards in the muck and is hoping to only have to give up the 2k.

After a lot of commotion and two floor managers are called to the table, Andrew correctly rules, "he has to pay (the remaining 22,400). He said 'call,' there's nothing I can do. His cards are in the muck, his hand's dead."

The hand takes several minutes to complete as Sheff counts out the balance two, 500 chips at a time.

When the action hits Justin Levy (Queens, NY) he calls, putting the pot at more than 75k, but instead of three way action, it's a heads up showdown. The all in player tables K Q while Levy has 7 7♦.

"What god do I pray to," asks Levy. "The poker gods," shouts a bystander.

Levy's prayers are answered when the flop comes down 9 7 9, giving Levy a full house and the win after avoiding runner, runner.

Levy is now close to 200k and sitting on a healthy stack at the dinner break, Sheff takes a hit, but is still in the tournament.

Event 17: Tough to Play with One Card

$170 + $30 (NL, Re-Entry)

Not "Josh"ing Around

When a Borgata Open rolls around you can count on seeing Josh Brikis representing the "Burgh." The suburban Pittsburgh native (Monroeville, PA) is usually sporting a Pirates or Penguins hat and plays as many events as possible. While he's a good player with many Borgata cashes, he's not good enough to play at a disadvantage.

Action folds around to Brikis on the button, who raises and gets a call from the big blind. At that point Brikis stops everyone in their tracks and asks the dealer, "can I get a second card?" After an awkward pause the dealer realizes he simply needs to throw Brikis the top card on the deck.

"I saw the jack of clubs and figured that was good enough to raise," says Brikis, who ends up going to a showdown and losing with J 3♣. The dealer's response, "I thought he was good enough that only needed one (card)."

Brikis is right around the chip average of 42k. Players are on 50 minute dinner break.

Nasir Knocks Down Another Table

While Strolling through the poker room it's hard to keep up with the floor managers, who are breaking tables fast and furiously. Boyd Bryant Sr. (West Grove, PA) has a mountain of chips, but because of the varying denominations it's hard to tell how much he actually has.

Bryant knocks out two players when he flops a set of 6s.

Level 10 (600/1200/200 ante) underway.

Event 17: Two More Down

$170 + $30 (NL, Re-Entry)

Ellis on an Island
(Sheff (left) talks to Ellis while stacking his chips)

Players continue to drop like flies and while walking by table 36, Jamie Kerstetter (Monroe Township, NJ), says "big pot building here."

The Gorilla says good luck to Jim Ellis (Philadelphia, PA) who replies with a big laugh, "how do you know it's me?" Gorilla responds, "because all your chips are in the middle."

Ellis gets two callers for his 5,600 bet and after the flop comes down king high, the action is check, followed by a shove for 15k. "I hope you have him beat," says the the player who checked."

After mulling it over he says, "call." The hands are on the table and Ellis shows A 4 and needs runner, runner vs A K from Harvey Sheff (Forest Hills, NY) who shoved post flop and the 8 8 of the third player. The board bricks out and Sheff takes his stack to 48k.

"I only played four hands today," says Ellis, "the other three were all pocket aces."

Level 9 is underway (500/1000/100 ante).

"That's the way it went all night," says Zaydman, "I couldn't beat him. He always had something just a little bit better.
